Movie Review: Gravity

Posted on 05:44 by Unknown
How the Movie doing At the Box Office?

Most of us will never get the chance to look at earth from space. But the select few who have can’t stop talking about the experience. US Astronaut Charles Walker once said, “I held my breath, but something was missing – I felt strangely unfulfilled.

Here was a tremendous visual spectacle, but viewed in silence. There was no grand musical accompaniment; no triumphant, inspired sonata or symphony. Each one of us must write the music of this sphere for ourselves.” Walker’s insight on the beauty of the planet also serves as the perfect way to sum up the experience of watching Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity.

online movie review

There’s a reason director James Cameron said, “This is the best space film ever.” Gravity is the singular most definitive cinema experience of your life. You think you’ve seen 3D films? You think you’ve seen IMAX movies? You think you’ve seen great sci-fi? This film will reset all the benchmarks in your head.

The first thing that piques your curiosity is how Cuaron’s 90-minute space adventure manages to hold your interest with just one character. That’s Sandra Bullock. George Clooney is the supporting actor and his presence on screen is best described as brief. But those are semantics of a kind of a film you’you've never seen before.

This film will make you feel, in every sense of the word, what it feels like to be in space. You will feel threatened by the idea of floating away into nothingness, forever, had it not been for a single hook and rope tethering you to a space station. Because when a meteor storm of debris hits, Sandra Bullock goes spiraling into space. And that is the fear you've never felt before.

Despite the brevity of its concept, there’s so much more to what Gravity says. Cuaron manages to sneak in scene after scene of visual allegories that hint towards one thing alone – the beauty of human life. That we are able to live and experience is the most essential truth of all. But it’s not all heavy-duty stuff. Clooney plays the mild-mannered astro-junkie. He puts the audience as well as the protagonist (Bullock) at ease with his effortless bouts of comedy. Heck, there’s even a brief scene of an Indian astronaut humming and space dancing to Mera joota hai Japani from Shree 420.

The sci-fi logic of the film is fairly infallible. Bullock’s character, quirkily given a man’s name Ryan Stone, uses every last ounce of resolve to survive in space. Her fight to live on adds the dramatic impetus to the movie. The background score, the digital photography and the visual effects are all inch perfect. The climax, even with its far-fetched situations, has the right amount of artistic touch. Gravity is one of the best films ever made.

Gori Tere Pyaar Mein review: Imran, Kareena can build bridge, not love story

Posted on 03:58 by Unknown
The one good line in Sajid Khan’s tedious Himmatwala belongs to its spoilt heroine, who tosses her head and says, “I hate gareebs!”

Punit Malhotra’s Gori Tere Pyaar Mein! meets some of these unfortunate “gareebs” through the good offices of the beautifully dressed and perfectly coiffured bleeding heart Dia (Kareena Kapoor Khan).

Bollywood new release

Dia is an ideology-free cause addict who jumps from one pressing problem to the next. Mid-leap, she meets Sriram (Imran Khan), the wealthy son of a mall developer (Nizhalgal Ravie) in Bangalore. Sriram is an Iyer (he has the sacred thread to prove it), irreverent to the point that he skips his grandmother’s cremation, and aimless enough to wander into his own wedding to a fellow Tambrahm (Shraddha Kapoor), who speaks Hindi with a Punjabi-via-Bambaiya accent.

It is apparent within the first few minutes that the caste backdrop and Bangalore setting have been chucked into the screenplay to show that the film-makers are fully aware of a world beyond the deracinated borough of Mumbai from which they hail, and from which such movies emerge. Gori Tere Pyaar Mein!

Bollywood new release
probably started life as a screwball comedy about a his-Italian-loafers-versus-her-Kolhapuri chappals couple, but the screenplay, by Malhotra and Arshad Syed, takes its cue from Sriram’s general air of foolish bravado and sallies forth recklessly and disastrously into unknown territory. It might not have been a bad idea to go back to the days when characters were called Rahul and Priya and had no surname with which to burden themselves or audiences.

The further the writers travel from their comfort zone—Bangalore, Delhi, and finally rural Gujarat—the more ridiculous it gets. The first half deals with Sriram’s ambivalent feelings towards Dia, while the second, and more risible section, attempts to apply balm on rural India’s sores.

Sriram’s redemption mission unfolds in a village that is Dia’s new home, which she rules on the strength of her fair skin (several references to that too), and which desperately needs a bridge (eventually provided by Sriram). Khan’s inability to inhabit his character or deliver his lines with conviction is proof that he is coasting along purely on the basis of his chocolate-boy looks, while Kapoor Khan picks up a pay cheque for a half-hearted effort.

Malhotra’s desire to engage with the issues that matter seems to be a response to criticism that Bollywood needs to move out of la-la land and in the direction of realistic cinema, but Gori Tere Pyaar Mein! is proof that this journey is not for everybody.

Latest Bollywood Movie Irandam Ulagam Review

Posted on 03:22 by Unknown
Tamil film Irandam Ulagam (second world) is a visually stunning fantasy story set in an imaginary world that describes a love that transcends human understanding of time and space writes S Saraswathi.

Be it Kadhal Kondein, 7G Rainbow Colony or Mayakkam Enna, romance has always played an integral role in director Selvaraghavan’s films and he has always approached it with his own distinctive style, ignoring the time-tested formula.
bollywood latest release
With a tagline that reads ‘How far will you travel for love’, his latest film Irandam Ulagam, starring Arya and Anushka Shetty, has been generating a lot of buzz.

And just as the tagline suggests, the film is all about a love that transcends time and space, exploring the possibility of a parallel world.

The music too has been creating quite a sensation. Harris Jayaraj handled the initial soundtrack, while later Anirudh Ravichandar was signed to compose the film's background score. Vairamuthu has penned the lyrics.

Irandam Ulagam, which is dubbed in Telugu as Varna is produced by Param V Potluri for PVP Cinema and is also being released in other languages such as Hindi, Georgian, Russian and Turkish.

Irandam Ulagam revolves around two love stories simultaneously occurring in two parallel worlds. One is the real world we know and understand and the other is a fantastical world filled with mythical creatures, enchanting forest, mysterious hills, and majestic views of the horizon.
Bollywood latest movie

In the real world, Anushka plays Ramya, a doctor, who is in love with Madhu Balakrishnan (Arya), a college professor. While in the fantasy world, she plays Varna, a high spirited, warrior-like character who deeply values her freedom. She is desperately pursued by Maruva (Arya again), who is madly in love with her.

Alternating between both worlds, the story progresses smoothly, like your average love story, until just before the interval, when the director introduces a dramatic twist.

The visual experience created by cinematographer Ramji is truly spectacular. He deserves full credit for bringing to life a beautiful new world, a magical place shrouded in mystery and filled with brilliant colours.

The music heightens the atmosphere and Anirudh has done exceptionally well. The songs, the lyrics, the picturisation as well as the vocals, everything fits beautifully.

Both Selvaraghavan and Arya are known to experiment with their films and characters and have been quite successful. In fact, 2013 has proved to be a great year for Arya, who had two back-to-back box office hits, Raja Rani and Arambam.

Bollywood Latest Release
Anushka not only shares equal screen space with Arya, but also plays quite a significant role. In fact, the story revolves around her and she has performed admirably.

Though a lot of effort and hard work has been put in by the entire team, the result is not quite what you expect.

The film has an unreal fairytale-like quality that prevents us from feeling the intensity, passion and pain of the characters. It seems more like a child’s bed-time story.

Everything from the unique costumes, make-up and body language gives the film a storybook and dream-like quality.

Irandam Ulagam is an ambitious project by a director who always strives to give a different and unique experience to his audience.

Bollywood's Sexiest Nautch Girl

Posted on 02:14 by Unknown
Between the goody two-shoes of the classic heroine and the cunning schemes of the proverbial vamp lies a seductive blend of spice and sugar.

They’re silver screen’s enticing club of courtesans, cabaret dancers and item song queens and explicit glamour coupled with flamboyant dancing is their keystone.
Bollywood new release
There’s one thing that must be absolutely clear from the beginning -- Rajjo is not about Kangana Ranaut, Paras Arora or even love. The real star of Rajjo is the khanjar (dagger).

If you love survival games and venture into Rajjo, you should stay for the pained (and painful) performance towards the end of the film where Kangana asks “Kaleja hai hazir, khanjar kahaan hai?” while sticking her chest out and making stabbing motions with her own hand.

The khanjar serves as comic relief in this romance musical. The rest of it, however, is better off being swallowed by the darkness of the theatre.
Bollywood new release

Rajjo is based on the timeless love/lust triangle -- we have a beautiful courtesan, her poor but sensitive lover and the heartless businessman who is hell-bent on acquiring her -- but that does not imply that the director (Vishwas Patil) couldn't do something new with it. It is sad that he chose not to.

Rajjo, the titular character, is a prostitute who lives in Mumbai’s red light district and, in case you didn't know where that is, don’t worry, the camera pans on the sign on the station that says Grant Road about three thousand seven hundred and forty three times in the film.

Chandu (Paras Arora) is a 21-year-old youngster who lives with mommy and daddy in far off Virar, away from Mumbai’s "bad influences", and pursues his "ishtudy" in Viva College. He is also a talented musician and the captain of the college cricket team.

One day, after winning a cricket match, Chandu and his team mates are taken by their coach Dari to Nagpada’s kothas where our young lad falls for Rajjo the moment he sees her on the dance floor in the mehfil.

Rajjo too ends up falling for Chandu and wants to run away with him. The young lovebirds must fight the big, bad world that threatens to come in between them.

Smells of Moulin Rouge all over.

The makers had enough material to work with given the setting of the story. However, there's a lot that goes unexplored -- Rajjo’s trauma from being used as an object, Chandu’s sheltered upbringing and inability to face the real world, the politics of the kotha and the despicable men who visit prostitutes.

Why Rajjo falls in love with Chandu, who shows clear signs of being a total loser, is beyond me. Why, furthermore, the director chose to focus more on Chandu is a mystery I would rather not delve into.

Our 21-year-old lad from the neighbourhood (who also happens to be a punter) is played by 19-year-old Paras Arora whose ultimate flaw is that he does not, in any way, look even remotely close to being 21.

Arora sometimes looks like a timid, sacrificial child-groom in comparison to the dark-eyed, seasoned Rajjo.

Maybe, because Arora is young, he could be cut some slack for a below par performance. Maybe there is a good actor in Arora after all. But in order to deliver a good show, Arora must first stop emulating his favourite Bollywood heroes and start being himself.

Meanwhile, Kangana Ranaut struggles with her Mumbaiyya dialogues and is not as graceful in the dance sequences as one would have expected.

Mahesh Manjrekar and Prakash Raj are absolutely wasted in the film.

The film'sbackground score seems to have been borrowed from an Ekta Kapoor daily soap but the songs, although not potential chart-toppers, are entertaining nonetheless.

Let me also address some questions that the film leaves unanswered here:

1. It is supposed to be set in the 1990s but the movie hoardings that are shown on the cinema hall in the film are from another time. For example, what was the poster of Memoir of a Geisha, which released in 2005, doing there?

2. Why does Prakash Raj’s character, Hande Bhau, praise Begum’s kurta calling it red when it is clearly pink? Furthermore, in the next scene why does the kurta turn red?

3. Who is Dari -- coach, mechanic, owner of a garage? It is never really made clear.

4. Why does Rajjo turn into a sanskari, pativrata woman after marriage? Why does Chandu’s mother blame her for his downfall and still eat food at her house? Why Chandu slap her across the face for dancing in a bar after marriage only in order to save him?

5. Why does Rajjo -- who has never taken things lying down even from customers or the feared Begum -- not say a word about it and goes back to him? Why do the film makers and the actors pretend that everything is perfectly normal about a man slapping his wife?

Rajjo is a horribly confused film. It is shabbily edited to the point of seeming to be cut-pasted from different films. The story launches into too many tracks which almost never come full circle.

I believe in live-in relationships: Sushant

Posted on 04:58 by Unknown
After dishing out hits like Kai Po Che! and Shuddh Desi Romance, Sushant Singh Rajput is being billed as the next big thing in Bollywood. He's on a personal high as well. In a free-wheeling conversation, Singh lets us in about his definition of love, his priceless bond with girlfriend Ankita Lokhande, and why he thinks living together changed the dynamics of their relationship.

bollywood couples

Expectations kill relationships

If staying with someone gives you psychological security, it's love. Just the idea of being with that person should make you feel loved and sheltered. I don't think any relationship can survive if one person is more dominating and controlling than the other. If you want to be with someone, you will figure out all possible ways to be with that person. Expectations kill relationships. I believe in investing time, emotions and efforts in a relationship rather than expecting anything out of it.

Ankita is my true love

I am very fortunate to have Ankita in my life. It's been four-and-a-half years since we've been together. We met on the sets of the TV show Pavitra Rishta, and hit it off instantly. Since we'd shoot for hours a day, we got used to each other's presence. It became difficult to handle the distance when I got into films. The best thing about her is that she is honest and transparent. She is not a hypocrite. She never asks or expects. This year, I have been really busy shooting for films and have hardly given her time; but she understands that I am busy and I respect that. There is no space for excuses and explanations in our relationship. I don't need to give her clarifications on any news article that's out. I am not an expressive person and it can get difficult to deal with people like me. Yet she somehow manages to figure out what's disturbing me and that's the reason we connect so well. Ankita is all the things a man ever dreams of.

Bollywood hot couples

A country full of hypocrites

I don't know what a marriage is but I strongly believe in the concept of live-in relationships. They give you an opportunity to know the person you wish to spend your entire life with. Our country is full of hypocrites. They say something and do something completely different. They make live-in relationships seem like a crime. I don't think living in is any different from marriage. Even in a live-in, you are answerable to each other. Most couples living together manage their finances jointly. The only difference between a marriage and a live-in is that the latter doesn't demand saat pheras and lifelong promises." "Ankita and I have been living in for four years. We never planned on having a litmus test and then deciding whether we should get married to each other. It just happened. But it did help us to know each other better. Now, we know that we can tolerate each other's habits and idiosyncrasies (laughs). We're sure we wish to spend the rest of our lives with each other.

Please watch this video to know the latest from this newest hot Bollywood couple

Keep the romance alive

To keep the spark alive in any relationship, it's important to utilize 'we' time well. Whenever I am free, I make sure I spend quality time with Ankita. I share everything with her so that she is always in the loop. She should know and understand what's happening in my life. Small and simple things like holding hands and having a candid conversation are romantic. Silence can also be romantic.

Ankita Lokhande slaps Sushant Singh Rajput in public?

There seems to be trouble in couple Sushant Singh Rajput and Ankita Lokhande love life.

According to a leading daily, both were seen arguing with each other at Yashraj Studios in Mumbai. The argument took such an ugly turn that Ankita apparently slapped Sushant. The fact that they were not alone did not bother the angry TV actress.

A report in India Today says that Ankita called Sushant outside the studio and then checked his phone. They had an argument and she lost her cool and allegedly slapped her live-in partner.

Is Sushant seeing someone else or has success gone into his head? That is something we will have to wait and watch.

Miss Venezuela Gabriela Isler wins Miss Universe 2013 in Moscow

miss universe 2013

Miss Venezuela, Gabriela Isler. The 25-year-old beauty won the big crown at Moscow’s Crocus City Hall on Saturday night, taking the title from Miss Universe 2012 Olivia Culpo. Isler, who hails from Maracay, works on Venezuela's Venevision television, a background that will suit her well for her year-long stint as Miss Universe.

She was asked what her biggest fear was during the interview question stage of the contest.

She replied: "Fear is not negative.

"We should overcome all our fears and this in turn would make us stronger.

"As soon as we overcome our fears we can face any challenge."

Miss Spain, Patricia Yurena Rodriguez, was the first runner-up and Miss Ecuador Constanza Baez the second runner-up.

The top ten semi-finalists included Great Britain, India, USA, Ukraine and Dominican Republic, while competitors from China, Indonesia, Switzerland, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Puerto Rico made the top 16.

This year's event is the 62nd staging of the competition.

But first up: posing in a $1 million bejeweled swimsuit, modeled on Saturday night by Culpo. "That swimsuit travels with an armed security guard 24/7," said co-host Thomas Roberts, according to Yahoo. (Perhaps Gabriela can phone up Candice Swanepoel, wearer of the $10 million Victoria's Secret Fantasy Bra, for some tips?)

Before she gets into that swimsuit, Gabriela did a few turns in a long-sleeve evening gown, a silver creation with dotted and striped details that reminded us quite a bit of Jennifer Lopez's stripey Zuhair Murad dress from the 2012 Oscars. It didn't hurt that it matched the winner tiara perfectly -- maybe that's what Gabriela had in mind from the start?

Gabriela Isler, whose full name is Maria Gabriela de Jesus Isler Morales, bested 86 contestants to win the diamond crown. Last year’s winner, American-born Olivia Culpo, crowned the 25-year-old, who is a TV host on Venezuela’s Venevision.
“I have a lot of emotions. I can’t describe all the things that I feel at this moment because I’m shaking,” she said. Isler will now pose in a specially designed swimsuit worth $1 million on Sunday.

3 reasons why Ariella Arida chosen Miss Universe

Posted on 19:00 by Unknown

miss universe 2013

OVER-COMER. Miss Universe-Philippines Ariella Arida is coolness personified. Styling by Kai Magsanoc. Makeup by       Kris Bacani. Hair by Jay Macasaddu. Photography by Niccolo Cosme.

CHIANG RAI, Thailand - When Ariella “Ara” Arida won in Bb Pilipinas 2013 Gold last April, she was not a clear favorite. Some said that her beauty was "divisive" — you either liked her or not.

But the 5’7” Chemistry whiz from Laguna has since amped up in terms of stage projection and styling; her non-fans have morphed into likers, and that included this writer. When she left for Russia last October 21, it was as if the Philippines sent a heat-seeking missile to Moscow.

Indeed, Ara Arida has become a dangerous force to reckon with, and so far she’s outshining many of her competitors in the 2013 Miss Universe pageant. (Read: 10 things you don't know about Miss Universe-PH Ariella Arida)

miss universe Ariella Arida

Why Ara Arida became the next Miss Universe:

1. Major sponsors love her

As soon as our girl landed in Russia, she caught the attention of Yamamay, the Italian lingerie and swimsuit brand which promptly included her in its select list of 23 contestants to model at its Meet and Greet Show.

To be selected by Miss Universe’s official swimsuit partner said a lot about Ara's physique. Her fitness trainer, John Cuay, who worked hard to sculpt her into a lean tigress, must be so proud.

As a testament to her catwalk skills, Ara was also chosen by Tony Ward Couture to be one of 27 girls to model its creations in Moscow’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.

miss universe Ariella Arida

Unfortunately, both shows happened on the same day (October 26) in venues far apart, so Ara could only participate in one. She was eventually fielded to the Tony Ward show which seemed to be a slightly more important gig since it was an evening gala show, unlike the Yamamay event which was held in the day.

Even more exciting: Ara was hand-picked to appear in a Mercedes Benz TV ad. Only 6 contestants were chosen, with Ara being the lone Asian in the group. The other girls were Poland, Austria, Mexico and Germany. Host nation Russia was also included in the advert.

Note that there are 86 girls vying for attention in the pageant, so Ara is indeed shining bright.

miss universe Ariella Arida

2. Her web interview has the most views

Ara’s official Miss Universe Truth or Dare web interview (where she did an unforgettable "Tik-Tilaok" imitation of a chicken) has culled the most number of views as of writing.

While having the most views doesn’t necessarily guarantee victory, it gives the Miss Universe group a good indicator of who is bringing in the biggest online audience.

We all know that more viewers = more sponsors = more revenue.

Below are the Top 5 and their number of views:

Philippines – 201,291
Poland – 172,086
Thailand – 74,504
Korea – 62,591
Vietnam – 57,765

miss universe Ariella Arida
Note that these figures were gathered at the time of writing and will change in the coming days. But the lead by the Philippines is too great to ignore and will be difficult to overtake with a few days to go before coronation night on November 9 (November 10, Philippine time).

3. She overcame the “Latinas-can’t-complete-a-sentence-in-English” controversy

For sure, it wasn’t smart of Ariella Arida to say on Philippine TV that Latinas couldn’t even complete a sentence in English. She was actually defending her own "not so good" English skills, trying to explain that many candidates struggled with English just like her; unfortunately, she exaggerated her point and chose the wrong words.

Those who knew her well came to her defense and said it was purely a faux pas. But when the wildly popular DJ Mo Twister did a major, major rant on Twitter about it, Ara found herself the butt of grammar jokes and nasty criticism. Some even advised her to get a translator (something which seems unlikely to happen at this point) to avoid future embarrassment.

When Miss Brazil Jakelyne Oliveira also tweeted that “we will make you eat what you have said and help you choke to death,” it stoked the fire. Although Brazil later issued a statement saying the tweet was not from her official account, it had already been re-tweeted numerous times, doing much damage to an already hurtful situation.

In spite of it all, Ara kept her cool. She issued an online apology and explanation while her handler, Jonas Gaffud of Aces & Queens (the group that develops and trains pageant contestants), did something similar.

When Ara arrived in Moscow, she quickly made friends with the Latina contestants. Several photos of Ara with them have since surfaced online. One "chummy" shot of Brazil and the Philippines seemed to be proof that no offense was taken — or, at the very least, all was forgiven.

In this controversy, Ariella passed with flying colors. She handled it like a true beauty queen by apologizing and then befriending the group that she seemingly maligned.

It looks like no matter what obstacle she faces — even the hefty contingent of haters and the bashers online — Ara is an over-comer. This unseen asset could very well be her key to the Miss Universe crown. (Miss Universe-PH Ariella Arida: 'Whatever happens is God's will for me')
miss universe Ariella Arida
Not-so-final assessment on Ara’s chances:

It’s still too early to say who the main front-runners are in the 2013 Miss Universe beauty pageant. The National Costume competition just took place last November 3 (November 4, Philippine time) and the very crucial Prelims on November 5 (November 6, Philippine time). It’s still anybody’s crown and scepter. (Read: Ariella Arida competes in National Costume at Miss Universe 2013)

Let’s hope, though, that the 3 Latino/Latina judges in the Prelims will disregard Ara’s faux pas.

The meeting between Miss Universe franchise owner Donald Trump and the contestants hasn’t happened yet (as of writing), and that is another key-event-in-waiting — pageant fans know that DT has the right to select a handful of his favorites who automatically enter the semi-finals.

What is clear at this point is that the Philippine representative has a very strong chance of making it all the way to the semis and even the runners-up circle with all the attention she’s been getting thus far.

However, more than a handful of competitors are blocking her way to the crown.

But as mentioned, Ara Arida is an over-comer, and it’s not beyond imagination for her to snatch the crown from her 85 rivals. - With reports from Lex Librea/Rappler.com

A lot of contestants were a vision in white during the national costume contest, including Brenda Gonzalez of Argentina and Vaumara Rebelo of Angola. Jakelyne Oliveira, Miss Brazil 2013, took the audience by awe as she flaunted her beautiful story-telling costume.

Miss USA, Erin Brady, stole the spotlight with her futuristic costume resembling to that of one of the characters in the Transformers.

"Nothing screams national costume like the first Miss USA transformer. Embracing powerful women in a transforming country that's made up of so much. That's what Miss USA means to me," Brady wrote on Twitter.

However, the most anticipated winner of Miss Universe 2013 title, Miss Philippines Ariella Arida put up a disappointing show in the Philippine traditionaldress, terno.

Ariella Arida, who has won the title of Ice Princess in a glam shoot at the pageant, scored poor on the colourful and imaginative aspects of the national costume contest.
